FORM Two national examinations started yesterday, with 435,221 candidates writing the papers countrywide.
The number of candidates has this year increased by 9.7 per cent from last year’s 396,770 candidates who wrote the examinations, according to the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA).
NECTA’s Executive Secretary Charles Msonde told reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday that of the registered candidates, 214,013 or 49.17 per cent, are male and the remaining 221,208, 50.83 per cent, female.
Dr Msonde said that all the necessary preparations for the examinations, which will be done until November 25, were in place. He further announced that the Standard Four pupils are scheduled to start writing their two-day national examinations on November 23.
Both, form two and standard four examinations serve as testing tool to establish the level of understanding of what the secondary school and primary school pupils have learnt in class for two and four years, respectively.
They exam results also help teachers to know the pass rate for each subject for improvement of their teaching methodologies in areas of weaknesses.
“Through improved teaching methodologies, pupils and students get the requisite skills for the successful writing of the final examinations and consequently improve the quality of education in the country,” said Dr Msonde.
The NECTA chief called on regional and council’s examination committees to ensure that all procedures for the examinations are observed, including the centres’ safety, calmness and free from any possible loophole for cheating.
“All invigilators should do their job efficiently with high integrity...we ask them to refrain from any kind of cheatings, otherwise they risk stern disciplinary measures,” he said, noting that the authority believes teachers have adequately prepared students to write their exams by adhering to the rules.
Dr Msonde asked members of the public to accord the council the necessary cooperation for successful writing of the examinations.
