MORE than 60,000 people will benefit from the Lake Zone water supply project jointly financed by the government and the African Development Bank (AfDB).
This was revealed here by Vice- President, Ms Samia Suluhu Hassan, while laying down a foundation stone of the project planned to benefit Sengerema, Geita and Ukerewe residents in the lake zone.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ms Hassan who arrived here aboard MV Nyahunge II said the entire project will cost an estimated 30.4 million US dollars (over 60bn/-). “The government is committed at improving water supply across the country.
There are a number of strategies being put in place, including this kind of project to address the acute water shortage,” she said in Nansio yesterday.
In her public meeting held at Kagunguli village in Mwanza’s Ukerewe District, the vice-president who also visited the ongoing construction of a theatre at the village’s health centre called on the public to protect the projects.
She was, however, saddened by reports of a tornado which hit the far-west island in Lake Victoria on November 04.
The heavy wind in the village destroyed dozens of residential structures and other properties. In her condolence message, the VP promised to offer 100 iron sheets and 100 bags of cement to help repair the destroyed houses.
