STUDENTS who were pursuing science studies have excelled academically with highest Grade Point Average (GPA) at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM).
They received accolades at the graduation ceremony yesterday. While all three best students in Arts classes obtained a GPA of 4.7, all three best students including two girls in Science Classes got a GPA of 4.8.The students are Ms Ester Marcel who pursued Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering; Zawadi Mdoe (Bachelor of Science in Chemical and Process Engineering) and Ms Clara Kimani (Bachelor of Science with Geology).
UDSM Vice-Chancellor, Prof Rwekaza Mukandala, said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that a total of 6,912 students were conferred with degrees, saying that the number of female students stood at 38 per cent.
He reminded the graduates on their duties and responsibilities to the university and the nation pointing out that with knowledge acquired at the higher learning institution the students can transform the society.
"Our expectation is that you (students) can apply the knowledge as vehicles to bring about development and positive change in society and our nation," observed the Vice Chancellor.
Prof Mukandala urged them to maintain good image of the University stressing that they should carry out duties and responsibilities with integrity. He said that the University had set UDSM Vision 2061 to increase the enrolment rate as well as introducing programmes which would cope with the current changes.
He added that the University had started to implement the goals set in the vision. "Most of the new programmes introduced by the University are aimed at creating knowledge in addressing the challenges resulting from climate change and capacity building," said the UDSM Vice Chancellor.
Prof Mukandala, who used the event to bid farewell to the university as it's the last graduation for him to preside as the Vice Chancellor before retiring from the post, said this year's graduation coincided with an important university event, that is marking 55 years since its establishment.
He said that the University had registered great achievements in the past 55 years.
