[Tanzania] Iringa, Njombe regions surpass registration targets

IMPLEMENTATION of under-five birth registration initiative in Iringa and Njombe regions has exceeded registration targets of children by 90 percent during the first six months.

Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ms Emmy Hudson of the Registration, Insolvency and Trusteeship Agency (RITA) Ms Emmy Hudson made the revelation in Dar es Salaam yesterday when addressing journalists on the progress of implementation of the program of registration of birth certificates for under five children in Iringa and Njombe, launched on 22 September this year.
Ms Hudson said the implementation of the program has been successful since the number of children registered for Njombe Region has risen from 8.5 percent to 98 percent, and in Iringa Region from 11.7 percent to 95 percent.
“The number of children registered in 2012 census in the region was 93,248 in Njombe and 129,120 in Iringa where the number of children registered after starting this program on 22 September this year was 94, 270 in Njombe and 127,842 in Iringa,” Ms Hudson said.
In terms of gender, said, more girls have registered in both two regions where in Njombe it was I50.3 percent and 50.4 percent in Iringa. However, the difference between the male and female children was minimal.
“Among of the aims of the program is reduction of the backlog of unregistered children and establishing a system for registering all new births in the regions.
Ms Hudson stressed that in order not to repeat the situation that existed in the backlog of unregistered children, RITA will continue to work closely with the regional and other partners to ensure that every child is registered and obtain a certificate within a short time after birth.
She added that the program was aimed at solving challenges that caused failure of children’s registration and obtaining certificates for them in time. “We are transforming the system to make it easier for children and their families to access the entitlement of a birth certificate and this is a continuation program,” she noted.
